Mark, in response to your post, which was brilliant by the way. http://www.dutchlowy.com/2009/09/14/take-your-shirt-off/ I don't mean to drop names like I was dropping the weight last night but the author of this post, Wes aka Snipes, was originally a member of Windy City CrossFit and now owns CrossFit Austin. He is a great guy and some of you might recognize him as he competed against some of you at regionals this year. I don't like to brag but "The Cal" is named after one of my closest friends in Chicago and I have first hand knowledge of how strong he has gotten since employing "the Cal." He was a member of the WCCF affiliate team that finished 12th at the games this year and just started crossfitting a year ago.

Checking in from the road. WOD yesterday - hike up and down two primary falls at Columbia River Gorge (multnomah & wahkeena)appoximately 3 miles with a handstand photo with the falls in the background. WOD today - white water kayaking in the powerhouse section of the Rouge River near Merlin, Oregon. I figure 5hours of that should do it! FTW! Miss you roosters!

Sam Z. - Sep 16 2009 - 11:26 AM
I'm flying a bit blind here as I could not read the article from Mark's post. For some reason the internet police here deemed it inappropriate. Anyhow, I am believer in "The Cal". I don't know what it is about rolling shirtless (RS), but I pretty much RS every WOD. For me, there's not a lot of thought as to why I RS. It just feels comfortable to me as I sweat a ton and I like the feel. I believe there's lots of different reasons why folks RS. In truth, I am sure to varying degrees of conciousness that some of what I describe below contribute to my habitual RS practice. Here's what I got: Ego - hey check out my rad body....I look good, so allow me to share.... Insecurity - hey I'm really not a great athlete but I look pretty good. My RSness might make you pay less attention to how bad I am. Comfort - there are those that don't have love for heavy sweaty t-shirts. Even the new fangled sweat wicking shirts can feel uncomfortable to some. Stickiness blows. Primal feel - there are those that subscribe not just to the paleo diet but to the paleo way of life. Folks, Caveman did not wear a shirt but I think he he did however wear some form of loin cloth. There are some that just like the primal, caveman-like feel of sweat rolling off the chest. The "I RS b/c you can't at Globo Gym" reason. This does not need much explanation as let's face it we do things a bit different at CF and we ain't Globo Gym. Get chicks - again, this does not need much explanation. For some, this experiment might do more harm than good. "The Follower" - others are doing it, so shall I. Some seek acceptance, some just need others to RS before them...... "I don't want to get back in my car with a stankyass shirt on" - again, explanation is not really necessary here. The recession - If I RS then I don't really have a need to buy work-out shirts. This is for the thrifty thinker. Fashion - you don't have to worry about matching attire when you RS. The kickin' my performance to another level reason - Clearly my RSness allows me to kick my performance to another quantum of achievement that could never be accomplished without my partial nakedness. In sum, there's lots of reasons why people RS. I'm sure there are more than I have covered. What I do know is that everyone should try it at least once.... Z

SP, I totally subscribe to the superstition routine. Sometimes when a workout is in a longer time domain your mind says to you at about the 6 minute mark, "alright, it's time to pop this shirt off and get to work." I think this really plays into the whole ritual aspect of the mental game. Popping your shirt off can be a mental trigger to stepping your game up. http://www.break.com/its-always-sunny-in-philadelphia/the-gang-gets-invi...

The shirtless debate (although there isn't any arguing) is great. Although, laughing while your professor is giving some long speech is not always good. Pool workout: 200m warm up. 10 min continuous swimming, 200m drills 50m sprint, 30s tread, 30s plank, 25m swim. x8 200m cool down I felt like jello getting out of the pool so this WOD may be real fun tonight.

ERIC - YES! I shoulda popped my shirt off...
  • reply
JD - Sep 16 2009 - 01:24 PM
Er, I have nothing to add to the shirtless debate, but I do have a minute to thank the Roosters for having me this morning. I upped my Fran weight by 10#, for a total of 45#. Rough, but doable. 8:31. My decision to come at 6am was inspired largely by something I've observed in the central core of regulars--just do it. I've noticed through the boards that people like chase, dean, mere, tyler, mel, et al--y'all come at all hours of the day. I can only assume that is based on what you have to do that day. One thing I really appreciate about crossfit is how proximity to excellence inspires excellence. So, even though I'm in JT and have junior league tonight, I thought to myself WWDD (what would dean do--ironic since he told me he's actually not working but whatever). Anyway, I got my ass up and went, and I'm so glad I did. Anyhoozy, gotta get back to it. Later and good luck 7pmers!

I visited Northwest Crossfit here in Seattle this week. They were the winners of the 2009 Affiliate Games. I told them I did crossfit in Dallas. The trainers instantly were like Crossfit Strong? I said, "No Dallas Central." Their response was, "oh...central...they were our competitors in the games." Again I said I'm at Dallas Central not the one in Austin. I was a little upset they had not heard of us...so just to put it out there to the CFDC elite and elite to be. Work hard and please put together a team for this years affilate games. Would love to see CFDC get the press it deserves not only from our athletes but also our coaching. miss you guys and gals.

I'd like to add the Mr. Pukey Effect. I RS when I have a fear of puking because I don't want today's lunch and mid-afternoon snack on my ninja t-shirt.

Given that I puked after Tabata Something else, you can bet I'll be RS tonight.

My RS protocol is totally random. It was rain-forest humid last night and the fans weren’t turned on. The shirt came off during the last few rounds of box jumps. Besides the immediate relief I felt from peeling the shirt off, the process also gave me a second to summon up some extra determination…kind of like taking a dramatic moment to roll-up your sleeves before saying something important. After all of this analysis, I am sure that I will be hyperconscious of any decision to RS in the future.

Jacquelyn - Sep 16 2009 - 02:34 PM
Wade - Spider monkey's are always top less!! As far as the fair food... I've never been to the Texas fair except for GameDay.. of which I'm always so spent after the Game (and the night before) that I usually go home, this year, I'm going cause I gotta try the fried cake!

We can't all be shirtless all the time. Else, clothing companies would go out of business and CFDC wouldn't sell its remaining shirt inventory.

7:07 RS and Rx I love the lively RS discussion today. In the end, it's all about what you are feelin'. At the least, everyone should feel comfortable to RS if they so choose. Wade, as always Bro, you are the man. I love doing work with you. Great effort. Cap'n thanks for the advice about engaging the abs. I wasn't able to do it all the time, but when I did it made a world of difference. As I told my rabbi tonight, in 4 months of Crossfit, I finally felt a little (and I stress - a little) comfortable feeling uncomfortable today. John - I was inspired by Mark and Rab to speak about my thoughts on RS. I actually do most of my deep thinking in the shower and not on the pot. Howard - I really appreciated your posts today. Z PS - Vic you are a freaking animal. Everyday I am amazed at your feats of athletic prowess. The coolest part is that you are an even greater person. Awesome job today - you are so WIN!
