CFDC Kitchen Corner: Paleo Indulgence

Tyler

Tyler

Apr 23 2009

style=As our coaches have reiterated time and time again, nutrition is a huge factor contributing to the efficacy of any athletic performance program, especially CrossFit.  This does not mean, however, that we should go entirely without certain luxuries.  With the weekend rapidly approaching, I’d like to share with you one of my new favorites, the Paleorita.

Much like its close relative, the Margarita, the Paleorita is best enjoyed in god company, preferably on a patio.  How do the two differ you may ask?  The benefit of the Paleorita over the Margarita is twofold.  First, it lacks the ‘lollipop in a glass’ sugary nastiness usually associated with the most popular of Mexican drinks.  Second is, yes you guessed it, it’s totally paleo!  The ingredients are as follows:

  • Silver or Blanco Tequila 2.5oz
  • Agave Nectar 1oz
  • Fresh Limes ¾-whole lime per drink

So far Milagro Silver is my favorite tequila for this drink.  Clean fresh taste and usually much cheaper than similar quality product like Don Julio and Patron.  Quality here is crucial since the flavor of the drink does not rest on sugary sour mix.  Agave nectar, or syrup, is the sweetener for the drink and can be found at Whole Foods and most large liquor stores, such as Sigels. Fresh limes… pretty self explanatory.

First cut the lime into quarters and squeeze into a shaker. After juicing the lime, muddle the lime rinds with the juice in the shaker until they’re nice and beat up.  If you find yourself bereft of a muddler, a wooden spoon will work just fine to mash the limes.  A significant portion of the flavor from citrus fruit comes from the peel, so don’t just juice the limes and toss the rinds.  Next add the tequila, agave nectar, and ice.  Shake until cold and serve in either a martini glass or over ice in a rocks glass.

Please try your own variations and let us know what works.  Be warned, these can be habit forming!

If you want a little fiz, try adding a little soda water to the shaker. (I'd say tonic water, but I don't think tonic is paleo)

And they're quite good, too! :) I had the pleasure of taste-testing this a couple weekends ago.

Yum! I think you should do a post-WOD demonstration in the gym, Tyler. Thanks for the recipe!

I think if you squeeze in a 1/8-1/4 orange slice you'll get some good flavor as well.
