Tolbert Marks

When I was asked to write down a few things about myself  I first read Dee, Mel, and Craig’s bio’s for guidance. It became evident to me that unless I took some editorial liberties with the truth that my story was not going to inspire anyone. Without boring you with too much information I can tell you very briefly what I am all about.

I met my wife, Sharilyn, on a blind date our first week of college, an unbelievable 25 years ago.  Looking back there was never much doubt about where we would end up. To say that I was lucky would be an epic understatement. Besides the fact that she tolerates me she is also an amazing wife and mother and is, seriously, as beautiful today as she was the day I met her. We are the parents of a sweet, smart 13 year old daughter and a 9 year old son who is so much like me it’s a little scary- good and bad. We have built a life together that is fulfilling in every sense.

Why Crossfit? I will try to explain what draws me to Crossfit with the fore knowledge that some of you will scratch your heads and wonder what in the hell I’m talking about…

Many of you are in your early twenties and are making decisions that will determine the kind of lives you will have. My limited exposure to Crossfitters leads me to the generalization that most of you are high achievers, competitive, and almost always compulsive about their passions.  So let’s agree that we are, generally speaking, a different breed of cat.

Robert Frost wrote a poem called “The Road Less Taken” that spoke to me years ago and still does today. Without trying to invoke memories of ninth grade literature class Frost’s charge was to chart your own course, take risks, live an interesting life, be different, etc.  Has a man or woman lived who didn’t envision taking the road less traveled- assumed that they would?  So why do so few people actually manage to do it?  For me it was the simple reality that I reached a point in my life where the only road I cared about anymore was the one that best provided for my families needs. Trust me, this road is never boring and is often exhilarating. It is not, however, unique.  Crossfit presented me with an opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone, break my routine, and challenge myself mentally and physically. The WOD was something that the guy next door didn’t do, couldn’t do. Crossfit presented me the opportunity to reaffirm my rejection of average Joe. NOTHING about what we do on Dyer Street is average.  I am still surprised that a year ago last month I drove over to the gym, not knowing a single person who had ever done a crossfit workout, and let Spencer put the hurt on me. Even more surprising was that I went back…I could write a book on how much I respect Spencer, Sam, and Koy and what they each bring to the table. I will just say that they inspire me to give my all, everyday.

The fitness achievements are immensely rewarding and have exceeded any expectation I may have had. They are not, however, the most rewarding aspect of the Crossfit experience for me.  It is hard to explain the bond that we develop in that gym, and I won’t attempt to do so here, but the most rewarding aspect of Crossfit for me has been the friendships made. Glad I took a little risk.

And now for the cheesy finish!!!!!!!

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

...Robert Frost

Tolbert

Favorite WOD: Kelly

Least Favorite WOD: Fran (a combination of the most devastating Crossfit movement, the thruster, and my Kyrptonite, pull-ups)

My first workout ever was just Spencer and I together in the gym.  I quit after round three (I think I lied to him and told him I had a meeting; not kidding).  It is one of my most competitive WODs now.  I still feel a sense of accomplishment as I cruise into round four.

I could name a lot of my current benchmarks, but, since I'm a runner at heart, I thought it best to share with you my current 5K time.  One year earlier, before I started Crossfit, my chip-timed 5K was a PR of 24:04.  I've since replaced 75% of my running with strictly Crossfit, and my current 5K PR is three minutes faster than a year before, at 20:53.  I think it's safe to say Crossfit works.

Tolbert, also placed at our Inaugural 'Roshambo' Competition. I am pretty sure you won an award and were not there to receive it! Awesome.
Tolbert, you remind me of my HS Bball coach - he was the man; I would go to war for that guy. So, according to the transitive property of equality -- that makes you "the man".

Stay good.

Tolbert, excellent bio my friend.

I hope Sam and Spencer are keeping these bios....it will make a great "Crossfit Coffee Table Book" of testimonials one day.

Tolbert, was a great story. My first memory of you was that running day at noon where I thought I had you smoked for the 800m and then you BLEW by me the last 15m. It showed me your toughness and pure determination, needless to say it was after that moment that I realized what it was going to take to be successful here. So I thank you.

I've never known my dad, but I'd like to think he was just like Tolbert. This guy is a beast during the WOD, but is the friendliest guy in the gym at any other time. If you look up "strong over head" in the encyclopedia there's a pic of T doing the press... Crazy strong! The Nooner just isn't the same without him. Tolbert you're my hero!

Tolbert, you are the Anthony of the over 40+ guys at CFDC. Your strength, speed, determination, and attitude are amazing! OK, now I need to bust your chops a little. When you first started CF, you said your goal was to loose a little weight by working out at noon instead of eating a cheeseburger and fries everyday for lunch. Is that what you mean by editorial liberties. Keep up the great work and join the roosters sometime.

Wow-thanks for the comments. Ant-That means a lot coming from an athlete like you. I appreciate it. I have lots of respect for you-least of all for your CF prowess. Bo- Proud to represent the over 40's but can't help but want to compete with the pups. Humbling at times but a blast. Scott- miss working out with you! Back in the day it was you, me, and Spencer at noon. You always brought out the best in me. For clarification,I like the noon class because it takes burgers and tex mex off the lunch menu, but not the reason I do crossfit. The noon spin class at the Y would accomplish that. I reject your gotcha! Thanks for your comments though. Grant-damn, thats the nicest compliment I've ever gotten. Kind of represents the bond I referenced- made me a little misty when I read it. I don't deserve it -but Thanks man. The noon crew is small but tight. chase- I remember it well. I laid in the weeds and passed you at the finish line. I also remember that you repaid me by running my arse into the ground for the rest of the workout to show me what was what. I loved it. Thanks again you for partnering with my son Saturday- he had a blast. Dave, thanks for that but to be clear-I am not a "wanted outlaw" in Peru- I'm just not very popular with the Sendero Luminoso insurgents. Suffice to say that enemies of democracy are enemies of mine...that is all I will say on that matter. Have loved getting to know you. Alex- nope- the Warming Hut at Crested Butte (they all look the same) Casey-coffee book that would have a VERY limited print. Will leave a check tomorrow for meat!

Tolbert - I remember when it was just 6 of us at the 6pm class wondering why we were doing this to ourselves and here we sit a year later in the heat asking the same questions. It is great to see your success and I agree with you on the bonds we build here at CFDC - nothing even comes close to them.

I love your honesty and the way you care for your family. It makes me smile from ear to ear. It has been an honor to work out along side you over this past year. I can't wait for another year. Keep up the great work and thank you always for your endless motivation.

Stephen, Thats some pure gold right there. We should all be required to write a mainifesto after a few pops. You are one of those rare people that just make you smile when you see them, it is always fun when you drop in on the nooners. we are still undefeated in Hoover ball my friend! Thanks for the nice words, at your current pace I will be chasing you in six months. Keep it up.

You are awesome Tolbert and your family is beautiful!! It's hard to believe that when I started almost a year ago, I was hanging in the noon class with you, Stephen, Matt and Tolbert! But what's funny is we are all still here toughing it out with the youngsters!! There's something to be said about the excellent coaching and loving supportive crossfit family that keeps us coming back for more!! Looking forward to the two year anniversary with you guys!!

Tolbert, you are certainly an inspiration!
I still remember the first time I met you... I was judging you in the CF Fittest Games competition (after only having been a member of CF for about a week). You got a tad bit annoyed with my judgement of your push-ups, which by the way, was certainly warranted, considering how "green" I was on all of the movements at that point. :) You certainly showed me what it meant to be motivated and tough through that competition.

Larry, Paleo fried chicken and coconut cream pie no doubt! Wish I had been there. Hey Dee! We both got a year younger this year. Miss seeing you at noon-don't be a stranger. Still have some guest passes for the Premier club. Katherine, I remember it well! I recall thinking at first ,great, I get a cute newbie counter who probably wont be comfortable challenging my ROM. Wrong!!!!! My first push up you said "one" my second push up you said "one"- sorry for the go to hell look i shot at you.

Tolbert-this is really awesome. I have so much respect for you and it is amazing how you can really get to know someone through Crossfit. We have always known each other but it is really neat how you can get to know someone further through mental and physical challenges and being part of a unique community. You are an inspiration, a friend and an amzing person. You are one of the first people I saw when I hit Crossfit last December. You said there is a very small percent of the population that can or want to put themselves through this. You made me realize we are a different breed but everyone has it in them (and you made me feel welcome). Stay true to who you are, you have been an inspiration to me and your friendship and encouragement mean the world....

Wayne, what a testament to the greatness of the Dyer deal that as much history as we have together (Debbie in my class at HP, Mike a couple years behind, my long friendship with your business partner, our parents have known each other for years, etc) that none of that afforded us an opportunity to get to know each other and develop a friendship until crossfit. Pretty cool and completely impossible to explain to outsiders. I have finally stopped trying. I bet you haven't... I really appreciate your nice comments. I am glad that I was able to help that first few weeks- i honestly had a feeling from the beginning that you would be one of the few that would not back down from the CF challenge but run at it full speed. I was right. Your positive attitude and energy are unreal and your sense of community is unmatched. Thanks for your friendship.

Tolbert WAS my running partner and friend until he began his torrid love affair one year ago with Crossfit! He tried to convince me to join him. Since he barfed after the first workout, my thought for the past year has been "why would I want to take that road?!" Tolbert's hero, Frost (really?), wouldn't even take that one! Well, he shared with you that he's only running 25% (I'd say more like 10%) of the time and I need more conversation from the "Queen of BS!" (Tolbert, was our run at Cedar Hill your inspiration for getting into Crossfit and poetry?) I look forward to sharing his real bio, and some pictures, with everyone since he's obviously snowed all of you into thinking he's a stud! Wayne, you know better than to stroke that ego. I'm not looking forward to a few humiliating months of Tolbert getting the best of me, but it will be worth it to get my partner back. See you at lunch!

The Courage to be New Rober Frost I hear the world reciting The mistakes of ancient men, The brutality and fighting They will never have again Heartbroken and disabled In body and in mind, They renew talk of the fabled Federation of Mankind But they're blessed with the acumen To suspect the human trait Was not the basest human That made them militate. They will tell you more as soon as You tell them what to do With their ever breaking newness And their courage to be new. I'm sure I have not met you Tolbert but the courage to me new takes guts. I'm 45 today, 8/13, and just read your bio. Your story is inspiring. Thanks.
